World Refugee Day 2002: Albania
An essay contest on the theme of refugees was organised by the high schools in Tirana in co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Science. A total of 720 students participated. Background materials about refugees and UNHCR were distributed to the schools.
On 26 June, an outdoor performance of the National Folk Ensemble was organised by UNHCR in co-operation with the Theatre of Opera and Ballet at Pyramid's Square in Tirana. The performance was organised under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Albania, H.E. Mr. Pandeli Majko. The event was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Skender Gjinushi, the Mayor of Tirana, Mr. Edi Rama, the diplomatic community, representatives of UN agencies, other international organisations, NGOs, refugees and asylum seekers, artists and journalists. The performance was recorded by Vizion TV.
