World Refugee Day 2007 National Activities: Moldova, Republic of

Schoolchildren around the country took part in essay and drawing competitions on the theme, "How can we help change the destiny of refugees?" UNHCR Moldova organized an annual film festival with the support of UNHCR Ukraine.

Cultural and sports events were held at a reception centre for asylum seekers. They included a volleyball tournament between a refugee team and students from the International Free University of Moldova and the State University of Moldova.

On 20 June, the Refugee Directorate organized an open air concert in a central Chisinau Square. An estimated 6,000 watched the performance by refugee of different nationalities and toured stalls offering paintings and handicrafts made by refugee children.
