HISTORY; PURPOSE:

The Zambia Red Cross Society was established in 1996. It is an independent, neutral and impartial humanitarian organization. It is one of the 181 National Societies that are affiliated to the international Federation of the Red Cross and Crescent Societies. Its mission and mandate is to augment and supplement government effort in alleviating all from of human suffering through well coordinated programmes.

STRUCTURE:

The National Society is composed of branches (67) and member's groups covered all the nine provinces in Zambia The National Council is the Highest decision making body of the society and meets once a year. The National Council puts place the National Excecutive Committee that is responsible for ensuring decisions made by the National Council are implemented through the National Secretariat. The National Secretariat is headed by the Secretary General who is also the Chief Excecutive Officer. Currently The ZRCS has 18,000 members and volunteers.

ACTIVITIES:

Zambia Red Cross Society is able to to respond to any disaster, either man-made or natural through the Disaster Management Unit.

The main sectors are training in disaster preparedness and provision of relief to disaster affected areas. Most of the activities involving relief to affected population are carried out through Red Cross Volunteers.

ZRCS has established a permanent disaster preparedness taskforce in liaison with government for operations in natural and man-made disasters. Through this initiative, ZRCS seeks to assist victims in disasters (such as flood, drought..) displaced persons and refugees with provision of food, clothing, blankets, utensils shelter and gardening implants.

The activities in food and non food distribution, the provision of water and sanitation facilities have been implemented in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross.

This Year the UNHCR in Lusaka has also given to ZRCS another refugee project called Urban Refugee Project, under which the Society is looking after the welfare of close to 8,000 urban refugees with educational support, provision of counselling services and other community services.
