UNHCR Records of the Central Registry

The Central Registry was responsible for the opening and routing of correspondence and for the filing of working papers and official records from 1951 to 1994. These records document the full range of UNHCR activities for nearly a half a century and as such provide an indispensable introduction to the work of the organization.

Subgroup: General Series: Missions Registry Code: 1/7 (Registry, 1951-1970) Dates: 02-1958/09-1969 Extent: 35 cm of textual records Scope: Series consists of reports by UNHCR staff on missions to various countries (predominantly Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). Headquarters staff undertook missions to attend conferences, to visit branch offices to review procedures, to review UNHCR projects in the field, to meet with government officials or voluntary agencies, or to assess refugee conditions and aid requirements. Files for missions by headquarters staff are arranged by staff member (surname). / Files for missions by branch office representatives consist of informal terms of reference, arrangements, reports, and occasional newsclippings related to visits to specific places. / Series includes a sub-series related to missions by the High Commissioner (see 1/7/5, "General - Missions - High Commissioner"). Date Notes: Many documents were destroyed when the files were re-organized. Arrangement: In February 1984, Registry reviewed the files and destroyed documents of no lasting value (e.g., hotel bookings, itineraries, etc.). Documents which were copied to other files, such as protection files or country files, were also removed from these Missions files. / Files for missions by headquarters staff were originally organized by classification number (this number, in the form 1/7/#, was assigned sequentially to staff as the need for a file arose). The files were re-arranged in 1984 into the present alphabetical organization. / Files for missions by branch office representatives are arranged alphabetically by the base country of the branch office representative.
