UNHCR Records of the Central Registry

The Central Registry was responsible for the opening and routing of correspondence and for the filing of working papers and official records from 1951 to 1994. These records document the full range of UNHCR activities for nearly a half a century and as such provide an indispensable introduction to the work of the organization.

Subgroup: General Series: Missions - High Commissioner Registry Code: 1/7/5 (Registry, 1951-1970) Dates: 04-1953/04-1969 Extent: 14 cm of textual records Scope: Sub-series consists of invitations, briefing notes, correspondence regarding mission arrangements, and reports on visits by the High Commissioner for Refugees to various countries. Reports are usually written by the UNHCR Branch Office representative in the country visited and include synopses of meetings and discussions with officials, highlights of events, and notes on press coverage. Files are arranged alphabetically by country. Date Notes: Many documents were destroyed when the files were re-organized. Arrangement: In February 1984, Registry reviewed the files and destroyed documents of no lasting value (e.g., hotel bookings, itineraries, etc.). Documents which were copied to other files, such as protection files or country files, were also removed from these Missions files. There are many gaps in the folio numbering in the files held by the Archives; in additional, the Registry classification scheme lists more files than the Archives currently holds.
