UNHCR Records of the Central Registry

The Central Registry was responsible for the opening and routing of correspondence and for the filing of working papers and official records from 1951 to 1994. These records document the full range of UNHCR activities for nearly a half a century and as such provide an indispensable introduction to the work of the organization.

Subgroup: Voluntary Agencies Series: By agency Registry Code: 4/# (Registry, 1951-1970) Dates: 01-1951/08-1971 Extent: 824 cm of textual records Scope: Series consists of files documenting UNHCR liaison with voluntary agencies doing refugee work (either exclusively or as part of a larger programme). There is little operational information in these files. Files generally include documents such as the statutes of the agency; brochures and pamphlets about the agency; copies of newsletters, news bulletins, monthly updates; journals; reports and updates on projects, activities, and work programmes; copies of annual reports, financial reports, and audit reports; minutes of regular meetings; invitations to UNHCR to attend annual meetings; information about annual meetings, including programmes, background papers, final conference proceedings, copies of resolutions, copies of speeches; requests from agencies for UNHCR representatives to speak at meetings; requests for articles about UNHCR or refugee issues; requests for greetings or messages for meetings; copies of speeches, greetings, addresses, and articles prepared by UNHCR for meetings or publications; copies of studies and reports prepared by agencies on refugee-related issues; directories of field offices and addresses, personnel, agency officers, and notices of changes; copies of press releases; occasional requests for UNHCR financial assistance, moral support, or sponsorship of an agency, committee, or programme; requests for information from or about UNHCR; arrangements for publication of UNHCR news or distribution of UNHCR publications to an agency's mailing list; correspondence between UNHCR and agencies related to their relationship; correspondence regarding proposed projects, and comments by UNHCR; correspondence regarding cooperation or coordination of activities on particular projects; arrangements for tours or visits by agency officials to UNHCR branch offices; reports from UNHCR Branch Office Representatives or Headquarters staff on meetings with agency officials. Arrangement: There are separate files for each voluntary agency. Agencies were assigned the next sequential number (in the form 4/#) as the need for a file arose.
