UNHCR Records of the Central Registry

The Central Registry was responsible for the opening and routing of correspondence and for the filing of working papers and official records from 1951 to 1994. These records document the full range of UNHCR activities for nearly a half a century and as such provide an indispensable introduction to the work of the organization.

Subgroup: Protection Series: Travel documents Registry Code: 6/2 (Registry, 1951-1970) Dates: 10-1950/12-1970 Extent: 168 cm of textual records Scope: Series consists of reports on countries issuing or recognizing the London Travel Document and the Convention Travel Document; correspondence regarding standardization of the cover, colour, and text of travel documents; negotiations with governments to encourage them to issue travel documents, and to issue them in a standard form; correspondence and memoranda regarding problems (refusal to issue or recognize travel documents; charges for issuing the document); correspondence regarding granting of visas on travel documents; correspondence regarding the right of return and the duration of return clauses; and arrangements for printing travel documents to be issued by African governments. Files are organized by country. Arrangement: The General file consists of documents related to various countries, inter-filed chronologically. Users should check both this General file as well as the country-specific file for documents related to any particular country.
