28 Feb 2007 A group of 47 Afghan refugees have flown from New Delhi to Auckland to begin a new life in New Zealand. This first batch of 10 families was picked by an immigration team sent from New Zealand last year to interview resettlement candidates recommended by UNHCR. Tampa Boys rescued by Norwegian freighter become New Zealand citizens
8 Apr 2005 In August 2001, 37 unaccompanied teenagers were among those rescued at sea from a sinking fishing boat in the Indian Ocean by the Norwegian container ship the MV Tampa. The Tampa Boys, as they became known, were accepted by New Zealand as refugees and today were some of the 76 refugees from the Tampa who gained New Zealand citizenship.
