South Sudan Operation
After many years in exile, Sudanese refugees are finally returning to their homeland – with the long-awaited organized repatriation launched by UNHCR on 17 December 2005.
The chief catalyst for the repatriation – which could benefit up to half a million people from six main countries in the region – was the January 9, 2005 peace accord between the Sudanese government and the Sudanese People's Liberation Army/Movement.
The agreement ended more than two decades of war which had killed millions, devastated the land and froze all development in what was anyhow one of the world's most underdeveloped regions.
