Education in Ireland

Education in Ireland

Forced displacement has reached historic levels and schools all over the world are welcoming into their classrooms an increasing number of refugee children. Teachers are also facing the challenging task of teaching children about refugees, asylum and migration. The subject is taught in most school curricula in some form, but with public debate intensifying and refugees and migrants featuring firmly on the world media agenda, many teachers are searching for quality teaching materials which they can use to help pupils make sense of forced displacement in all its complexity.

UNHCR staff in Ireland regularly give talks and presentations to university, and secondary and primary school students on a variety of issues. Please contact theExternal Relations Unitfor more information.

UNHCR Ireland Refugee Education Pack

The Refugee Education Pack is aimed at teachers who wish to familiarise their students with facts and information about refugees. Its goal is to better inform young people about the reasons people flee and their rights under the law.

The pack is designed for teachers of Civic, Social and Political Education, who are teaching students aged from 12 to 15. However, we hope it will serve as an easy-to-use teaching resource for secondary level students of all ages.
