International Conference on Addressing the Humanitarian Needs of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons inside Iraq and in Neighbouring Countries

17-18 April, 2007
Palais des Nations, Geneva

World attention continues to be focused on the violence and human suffering in Iraq. But the broader humanitarian consequences, including increasing displacement within Iraq and to neighbouring countries, have yet to be fully appreciated and addressed. In a bid to highlight the issues, UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres decided to convene an international conference focusing on the humanitarian dimensions of the Iraq situation.

The main aims of the April 17-18 conference were to sensitise the international community to the humanitarian impact of the violence and conflict in Iraq; to seek commitments to address the immediate and forseeable needs; and to identify targeted responses to specific problems.
