In Ulyankulu, Tanzania, the nearest secondary school is far from the remote refugee settlement. The long path walked to school became treacherous, and incidences of sexual or gender based violence were often reported.
The distance and danger caused many girls to drop out, either for fear or due to unwanted pregnancies.
To address this dearth of educational opportunities, an Adult Learning Institute has been created in Ulyankulu, providing girls and women access to education, community, and greater opportunities. Below you will find a few snapshots of the strength and resilience of this group of impressive young women.
The Adult Learning Institute aims to bring about innovative approaches to education, sustainable building, and community life. Above, the girls have recreation time and then were invited to discuss the benefits of education versus the challenges they have faced in their past.

A nursery and daycare attached to the school allow women with children to continue to study while their children are watched after by community volunteers. The program runs in collaboration with the Catholic Church in Ulyankulu, who also provides support. Above, children play games, making schooling more exciting while encouraging them to learn.

In the Institute, the girls are stimulated through international and external forces within their environment, and are likely to have a better future.
