Assistant High commissioner in southern Caucasus

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Kris Janowski – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at the press briefing, on 1 July 2003, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees, Kamel Morjane, is currently on a visit to the southern Caucasus to meet with senior officials and politicians as well as see first-hand the situation of refugees and displaced people in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. He arrived in Armenia early yesterday (Monday) and met Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan later in the day. On Wednesday he will proceed by road to Georgia, visiting a number of refugee sites on the way. He is scheduled to meet the President of Georgia, Mr. Eduard Shevardnadze at the end of the afternoon. On Saturday, he will proceed to Azerbaijan, also by road. On Monday he is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister, Mr. Artutr Razi-zadeh. He will stay in Azerbaijan until Wednesday 9 July. The Assistant High Commissioner will make extensive field visits in all three countries.
