Children - UNHCR Actions
The protection and care of forcibly displaced children, including adolescents, is a UNHCR priority, and therefore the rights of girls and boys of diverse backgrounds and abilities are of specific concern. The 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other legal instruments provide the framework for UNHCR to assist and protect children. Under its mandate, UNHCR seeks to uphold the rights of all children of concern, including through prevention and response to all forms of violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. The organization's Five Global Priorities for Refugee Children and ExCom Conclusion No. 107 (LVIII-2007) on Children at Risk guide UNHCR's work. The activities undertaken by UNHCR include family reunification; access to education on a non-discriminatory basis; access to health care and psycho-social support; demobilization, disarmament and reintegration programmes for children associated with armed forces and armed groups; vocational skills training and income-generating activities for adolescents; awareness-raising activities on gender issues and children's rights; and prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence. It also continues to build the capacity of its own and partner staff to provide child protection.
