Avian and Human Influenza
Refugees and populations displaced by conflict are likely to be particularly vulnerable to a human influenza pandemic, especially in countries which have weak infrastructure. UNHCR works to mitigate risk factors for increased morbidity and mortality from pandemic influenza, and advocates for refugees, displaced people and other persons of concern to be included in national and regional preparedness planning.
The main risk factors for increased morbidity and mortality from pandemic influenza in the population of concern to UNHCR are overcrowding (specially in camps); poor sanitation; high prevalence of malnutrition; high prevalence of communicable diseases; lack of access to health facilities; lack of health staff and lack of medical supplies.
