How WLL Works

Women Leading For Livelihoods (WLL) relies on the generosity of individual donors and the private and corporate sectors to fund projects around the world. These livelihoods projects are implemented by UNHCR's partners, usually national or international non-governmental organizations.

UNHCR has developed a solid process for screening and ensuring quality in the design of project proposals, involving in-house expertise in livelihoods and gender equality. WLL's project criteria ensure that refugee women are involved in identifying their competencies and needs, and that they are involved throughout the planning and implementation of all projects. Cultural sensitivity and sustainability of projects are key to our approach.

WLL is a platform for the promotion of refugee women's rights and economic empowerment, and has developed a range of technical guidelines, promotional material and reports. WLL is also a platform for innovative approaches, such as establishing production lines of fuel-efficient stoves or sanitary material for sale to both refugee and host communities, or partnering with a social enterprise that produces fair-trade goods.
