Omaymah Tomawis is one of nearly 400,000 people displaced by the ongoing firefights in Marawi City. Having experienced displacement twice in her lifetime, she hopes this incident will be her children’s first and last.
Forced displacement worldwide at its highest in decades
UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report said 65.6 million people were displaced at the end of 2016, some 300,000 more than a year earlier. Over 10 million people were newly displaced during the course of the year.
