World Refugee Day, 20 June 2004
On 20 June, UNHCR will organise a dance and song competition open to the public. The different refugee communities will prepare traditional food. A craft exhibition will be held, including drawings by children. At the end of the day, UNHCR will organise a party where well-known Gabonese bands, as well as refugee groups, will perform.
A gala football match will be organised between a team of Gabonese nationals, and one composed of refugees, implementing partners and UNHCR staff. At the end of the match, UNHCR will award not only the best team but also reward fair play, technical and most friendly gestures. A drink will be offered to all participants.
An exhibition and sale of crafts made by refugees, including drawings by children, will be organised to show people that refugees want to integrate into their host society through legal activities. It will also help refugees to start their craft business.
To raise awareness among both refugees and locals, films on refugee issues will be broadcast on TV and World Refugee Day T-shirts will be distributed to refugees. Radio stations and newspapers will also cover the events.
