Resettlement

Resettlement Fraud: Important Notice
UNHCR has discovered that unscrupulous individuals are using elaborate internet scams to prey on vulnerable people by offering them resettlement in exchange for money. Please read our news story here.

Refugees are not always able to return safely home or to remain in the country where they received asylum. There are situations in which resettlement to a third country is the only safe and viable durable solution for refugees. Thanks to the generosity of resettlement countries and the tireless endeavour of local non-governmental organisations, resettlement has become a fundamental element of the system for the international protection of refugees.

What is resettlement?
Resettlement under the auspices of UNHCR has a dual character. While it serves as a tool to ensure the protection of refugees, it is also one of the three durable solutions to bring the plight of refugees to an end. It also addresses the special needs of refugees which cannot be met adequately in the country of refuge. Resettlement is also a burden/responsibility sharing.

The Integration Initiative
To complete the continuum of resettlement as a truly durable solution for refugees, UNHCR must be responsive to the subsequent issues arising in the context of integration in the resettlement countries. As a joint initiative by the tripartite partners in resettlement, the Integration Initiative endeavors to encourage the exchange of "best practices" and to mainstream the Principles endorsed at the International Conference on the Reception and Integration of Resettled Refugees.

Reinforcing field capacity: Training and workshops
UNHCR develops training programmes and materials to enhance the capacity of resettlement operations in the field to perform quality resettlement and create more opportunities for transparent and efficient programmes.

Emerging resettlement countries

Partnerships in resettlement
Resettlement could not operate without the co-operation of NGOs and government authorities. How does this strategic partnership operate?

Annual Tripartite Consultations (ATC)
The Consultations are an important vehicle for UNHCR’s co-operation with Governments and NGOs and a mechanism to enhance partnership. The Consultations offer a forum to review progress on resettlement issues during the year, but more importantly, to re-focus and shape a joint strategy on resettlement.
