The Population and Geographic Data Section

Maps produced by UNHCR's in-house unit serve diverse purposes.

The latest sophisticated satellite images and the global positioning system can help track the movement of refugees, the exact latitudinal and longitudinal locations of refugee camps, buildings or even individual storehouses and the environmental impact on surrounding areas caused by their presence.

Such information, passed on to military forces operating in the area, can even prevent humanitarian centres from being targeted as happened during the recent conflict in Afghanistan.

General information and operational maps highlight available logistical facilities such as roads in a given area as well as how many uprooted peoples are on the move.

Maps are central to UNHCR's own operational planning and are also used by governments, other humanitarian agencies and in briefings with donors and the media, among others.
