Jornal o Serrano
June 15, 2011, in Serra do Mel, Brazil
Filgueira, 36, was shot six times by three unidentified men on a motorcycle as he left his office on the evening of June 15, local journalists said. He was founder and director of the local newspaper Jornal o Serrano and regional director of the ruling Workers' Party. He died at the scene.
On July 2, police arrested five suspects who they said belonged to a gang of contract killers. Police also seized several weapons and large quantities of ammunition in the arrests.
According to local press reports, Filgueira had received death threats after he published a poll criticizing the performance of the local government. Federal police chief Marcelo Mosele told CPJ that investigators were focusing on Filgueira's journalistic work as the motive for the crime.
