The Costaricaweb.com Website listed positions within the Costa Rican government from the period of 1998 to 2002 and named Judge Edgar Cervantes Villalta as the President of the Supreme Court of Justice (Corte Supremo de Justicia), First Court (Sala Primera) (n.d.). Rodrigo Montenegro Trejos was also named as one of the judges of the same court (Costaricaweb.com n.d.).
A La Nacion article of 24 February 2002 reported that Rodrigo Montenegro was a candidate for the position of attorney for the National Union of Soccer (Union Nacional de Futbol, UNAFUT) of Costa Rica. An election for the position mentioned was to be held on 28 February 2002 (La Nacion 24 Feb. 2002). The La Nacion obituary column of 13 May 2002 reported that Edgar Cervantes Villalta had died at his home in Hatillo, San Jose on 11 May 2002. An article of 25 May 2002 provided a retrospective of Cervantes' life, stating that in his 48-year career as a judicial public servant (funcionario judicial), he worked nine years as the President of the Supreme Court, and 28 years as a judge (La Nacion).
The Website of the Supreme Court of Justice lists Rodrigo Montenegro Trejos as the current President of the First Court of the Supreme Court of Justice (Costa Rica n.d.). However, in an 8 November 2002 article in La Nacion, the Supreme Court of Justice announced the retirement of Judge Rodrigo Montenegro, effective 16 January 2003. A subsequent article reported that Judge Carmen Escoto replaced the retired Montenegro as Judge of the First Court of the Supreme Court of Justice (La Nacion 18 Feb. 2003).
No information about whether Rodrigo Montenegro and/or his son owned a law firm in San Jose or Heredia could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
