Cuba: Circumstances, if any, under which a Cuban can lose his or her Cuban citizenship

Information on the subject of loss of Cuban citizenship is scarce among sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

Two media sources consulted indicate that Cuban citizenship cannot be lost, even if a person wishes to renounce it (IPS 1 June 2000; AP 10 Aug. 2000). According to Jose Ramon Fernandez, president of the Cuba Olympic Committee, Cuban citizens never lose their nationality (ibid.). Fernandez made the statement in a letter to the Spanish Olympic Committee in which he was discussing the desire of the Cuban athlete Niurka Montalvo, who had become a Spanish citizen, to compete for Spain in the Olympic Games (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
