Greece: Information on the requirements for an African person (for example, a Nigerian) to obtain a one-year student visa while visiting Yugoslavia during the period 1989-1992

According to an information officer of the Embassy of Greece in Belgrade, a Nigerian or other African person would not be able to obtain a student visa for Greece in Yugoslavia, as the Greek embassies issue student visas only in the countries of origin of the students (8 Apr. 1992). The Embassy of Greece in Belgrade is currently not aware of the specific regulations for Nigerian student visa applicants (Ibid.).

                In a telephone interview, an attaché of the Embassy of Greece in Ottawa stated that student visas are issued only by the Embassy in, or responsible for the area of, the country of origin of an applicant (3 Apr. 1992). The attaché added that the Embassy in a country being visited may assist in forwarding the applicant's passport to the pertinent Embassy, should it be impossible or impractical for the applicant to return to his or her country for the procedure (Ibid.). The procedure may also be carried out, for example, by the applicant's parents in the country of origin (Ibid.). The specific requirements vary according to each country of origin, although study certificates and other related academic documents would normally be required for the granting of a student visa (Ibid.). Foreign students of one country may be in Greece with different status and/or visas, and may have met different requirements to pursue studies there (Ibid.).
