According to a representative of the Consulate of Greece in Toronto, the only way a Greek citizen can lose his or her citizenship is to renounce it (19 Nov. 1993). The representative also stated that it takes about two weeks for a Greek passport to be issued but added that passports can only be issued to Greek citizens who have landed immigrant status in Canada and who have either fulfilled their military service requirements in Greece or have documents proving their exemption from military service (Ibid.).
The representative said that Greek citizens who lose their passports while in Canada can be issued a travel document but not a passport (Ibid.).
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
