Guatemala: Information that an individual seeking to recover lost Guatemalan nationality must present to Guatemalan authorities; whether the information can be sent to the Guatemalan embassy in Ottawa

The information that follows was provided during a telephone interview with consular staff at the Embassy of Guatemala in Ottawa on 17 January 2003.

Further to GTM39191.E of 15 July 2002, special or exceptional consideration of applications would depend on the specific circumstances of the individual case. Since Guatemala has undergone special circumstances through the decades and individual circumstances can vary widely, no single statement can cover all that might be relevant to a specific case. As a general rule, however, a person seeking to recover his or her lost Guatemalan nationality should present all potentially relevant information for consideration, including that related to the original holding of Guatemalan nationality and the circumstances that led to its loss. Decisions about whether to grant or return Guatemalan nationality ultimately rest with authorities in Guatemala; however, Guatemalan consulates or the consular section of the embassy can assist persons outside Guatemala in the process and serve as a channel to forward any information to the pertinent authorities in Guatemala.
