Information about whether People's National Congress (PNC) members or supporters are being targeted, harassed, attacked or threatened by People's Progressive Party (PPP) members or supporters was scarce among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
In a 24 November 2005 telephone interview, a representative of the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) stated that the GHRA has not received any complaints regarding the targeting of PNC members or supporters by PPP supporters within the time frame mentioned. Furthermore, in his opinion, the representative believed that any allegation to this effect was unfounded.
An official with the Office of the Ombudsman corroborated the GHRA's information in a 24 November 2005 telephone interview, stating that the Office had not received any complaints involving the targeting of PNC supporters by PPP supporters since she started working there in June 2004. Subsequently, the official noted that she was unaware of any ongoing cases of this nature that commenced previous to her employment with the Ombudsman's Office.
GUY42608.E of 10 May 2004, GUY42977.E of 4 October 2004, and GUY43046.E of 13 October 2004 provide some background information about inter-party tensions between PPP and PNC members.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
