China/Hong Kong: Information on whether the Government of China permits nationals of China to emigrate to Hong Kong

A representative of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ottawa provided the following information on the above subject during a telephone interview on 28 July 1993.

Hong Kong is a part of China which is currently administered by the British Government. "Emigration" is not an appropriate term to describe the movement of people from one area to another within the same country. The people of China can move from the mainland to Hong Kong and vice versa. In this context, it is possible for nationals of China to move to Hong Kong if they apply legally for residence and not nationality in Hong Kong. Applicants for residence in Hong Kong must meet the immigration regulations both of China and of the present authorities of Hong Kong. The representative was unable to provide information on the relevant immigration regulations.

Additional and/or corroborating information on the above subjects is currently unavailable to the DIRB.
