Honduras: An organization called "Comité de Vigilancia de la Colonia Suyapa" (Vigilance Committee of the Suyapa Colony), its role and cooperation with the police in fighting criminal groups (1996-2002)

No references to a "Comité de Vigilancia de la Colonia Suyapa" (Vigilance Committee of the Suyapa Colony) could be found among the published sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

However, Suyapa is mentioned in Honduran media as a barrio (neighbourhood) in the Chamelecon area of San Pedro Sula, by the Chamelecon river (Terra 18 Jan. 2002; La Prensa 8 May 1998), as well as a barrio of El Progreso, by the Pelo river (ibid. 28 Oct. 1998; ibid. 30 Oct. 1998).

Two 2002 articles refer to the colonia Suyapa of Chamelecon, in San Pedro Sula, as the site of a police "megastation" (megaposta) to be inaugurated in the near future (El Tiempo 14 Feb. 2002; ibid. 14 Mar. 2002). One of the reports states that the mayor of San Pedro Sula met with in early March with representatives of patronatos (citizens' volunteer or non-profit associations) of some 45 colonias of the Chamelecon sector, described as one of the most dangerous of the city, to seek their cooperation in a new public safety program called "Una Chamelecon Segura" (A Safe Chamelecon) (ibid.). However, the only specific reference to Suyapa in these reports is as a site for the new police "megastation" (ibid.; ibid. 14 Feb. 2002).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
