On 5 July 2001 an official at the Embassy of Italy in Ottawa stated the following:
A mother or father of an Italian citizen requires a visa (accompanying family member) to enter Italy. But having said that, a permit to reside in Italy will be granted even without the appropriate visa on the passport as long as proof can be given of the relationship with the Italian citizen
