Jailed Belarus opposition figure starts hunger strike

October 22, 2009

MINSK Jailed Belarusian opposition activist Alyaksandr Bandarenka began an indefinite hunger strike on October 19, demanding that his case be reconsidered, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Bandarenka's lawyer, Zmitzer Laeuski, told RFE/RL that he visited his client in Detention Center No. 1 in Minsk on October 22, where he was informed about the hunger strike.

Bandarenka, a private businessman, was convicted of financial crimes and sentenced to seven years in prison on October 9.

Last year, Bandarenka, who is an active member of the opposition United Civic Party (AHP), ran unsuccessfully for parliament.

He and his supporters say his case is politically motivated.
