Two Afghan guards killed in insurgent attack

November 03, 2011

Insurgents including suicide bombers attacked the compound of a security contractor for NATO-led troops in western Afghanistan on November 4, killing two Afghan guards.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Herat province. A provincial government spokesman said the attack occurred at the contractor's compound not far from a NATO base and the main airport in the province.

The insurgents first detonated a bomb near the entrance of the building and then stormed the compound.

Two Afghan guards were killed and five people were wounded in the gun battle that followed.

All the attackers were also killed.

Herat city was among the first seven areas where security was transferred from foreign troops to Afghan forces in July.

It marked the first step in a handover process due to end with all foreign combat troops leaving Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
