At UN, Kyrgyz president calls for mechanisms of accountability

UNITED NATIONS – Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbaeva has proposed that the United Nations develops mechanisms to hold authoritarian rulers responsible for their actions.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on September 22, Otunbaeva said the wealth and resources of Kyrgyzstan had been pillaged in the last two decades by "criminal and corrupt" rulers, with billions of dollars of stolen money whisked out of the country.
"Dictators must be held accountable for the deeds they perpetrate against their peoples and not finding shelter abroad," she said. "The UN must introduce strict standards and procedures to make sure that justice is served and the stolen wealth is returned to the people."
Otunbaeva emphasized that the introduction of such standards and procedures by the UN should not be viewed as a means of political vendetta but rather to make sure that authoritarian rulers are held accountable for their deeds.
