Uzbek-Kyrgyz border checkpoint reopens after 18-month break

BISHKEK – A checkpoint on the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border is reopening at 8 a.m. local time on October 26 after an 18-month break, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
All checkpoints along the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border were closed in April last year after antigovernment protests culminated in the ouster of then Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev.
Kyrgyz Border Guarding Service head Zakir Tilenov told RFE/RL that the agreement on reopening the Dostuk checkpoint was reached at talks in Andijon earlier on October 24 with his Uzbek counterpart Ruslan Mirzaev. Other checkpoints will remain closed.
Many local residents in both countries have experienced difficulties crossing the border since the checkpoints were closed.
