Colombia: Status of Jorge Eliécer Camargo, also known as "El Yor," and whether he has any links with guerrilla or paramilitary groups

On 15 March 2003, the Barranquilla newspaper El Heraldo reported that 40-year old Jorge Eliécer Camargo, also known as "El Yor," had been killed during an attempted robbery of the System Center, a technical college specializing in computer sciences located near the intersection of 43rd Avenue (carrera 43) and 82nd Street in Barranquilla. Camargo and two other armed men were allegedly making their way along a corridor to the college's administrative offices when they were discovered by an unidentified security guard (El Heraldo 15 May 2003). Shots were exchanged between the guard and the three men, causing "dozens" (decenas) students in nearby classrooms to panic (ibid.). Both the security guard and Luis Blanco Arellano, a student, were injured in the incident, while Camargo, who was reportedly shot twice in the head, died as a result of his injuries (ibid.). The other two assailants escaped on a motorcycle (ibid.).

No reports of Camargo being linked either to the guerrillas or to illegal paramilitary forces could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
