Malawi: Information on the Christian Liberation Party

In addition to the information already available to you, please find attached some articles that provide information on opposition and political groups other than the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The oldest article available to the IRBDC in Ottawa on Malawi opposition groups dates back to 1981. However, the only reference to the Christian Liberation Party found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC is in a 1992 report on a speech by Malawi President Hastings Kamuzu Banda (BBC Summary 10 Apr. 1992). In this article, the President refers to "the Christian Liberation Party of Chester Kasonga [phonetic] and Archbishop Tuniseen [phonetic]", with a reference to T.D.T. Banda following a reference to the Congress Liberation Party (Ibid.). President Hastings Kamuzu Banda then refers to T.D.T. Banda, saying that he "could not get anyone to nominate him" and left afterwards for Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), dying in Bulawayo (Ibid.). The article does not clearly link T.D.T. Banda with the Christian Liberation Party. President Banda reportedly stated that the Christian Liberation Party did not win any seats in an election before the breakup of the Nyasaland (now Malawi)-Rhodesia federation in 1963, indicating that the end of the federation made Malawi a single-party state ruled by the MCP (Ibid.).
