Attacks on the Press in 1998 - Jamaica

As of December 31, 1998

Except for a few minor incidents in which reporters covering political rallies were verbally harassed, Jamaica's diverse and independent media were able to work unhindered.

The Gleaner Company Limited, owner of The Daily Gleaner, continued to appeal a US$2.5 million libel verdict stemming from an Associated Press story that ran in 1987. The story contained allegations that former Tourism Minister Eric Anthony Abrahams had accepted bribes.
