According to the Australian High Commissioner in Ottawa, children born on Australian territory, regardless of their parents' citizenship, automatically received the right to Australian citizenship before 20 August 1986; after that date, however, children born in Australia had to have at least one of their parents be an Australian citizen, or have resided in Australia for 10 years from the child's date of birth [Information provided by the Australian High Commission in Ottawa, telephone conversation of 29 January 1990.]. Please find attached a section of the Australian Nationality Act pertaining to children born in Australia to non-Australian citizens [Chapter 2: Acquisition of Australian Citizenship Under Transitional Provisions and by Birth or Adoption.].
