During a 15 March 2004 telephone interview, a Minister-Counsellor and Consul at the Embassy of Benin in Ottawa, stated that a child whose one of two parents (mother or father) is a citizen of Benin, is automatically entitled to Beninese citizenship, regardless of the place of his (her) birth.
According to information found in the Citizenship Laws of the World database, which appears on the United States Office of Personnel Management Investigations Service Website, a "child of a Beninese mother or father, regardless of the country of birth," is a Beninese citizen by descent (United States Mar. 2001).
