According to an Iberia Airlines of Spain official in Montréal, all passport checks described in Response to Information Request ESP18210.E of 1 September 1994 will take place in any Spanish international airport for direct flights to a foreign destination (14 Dec. 1994). The Iberia official also stated that no airlines operate direct flights between Barcelona and any Canadian destination. As a result, a passenger flying from Barcelona to Canada must travel from Barcelona to Madrid and from Madrid to Canada (ibid.). In this particular case, the thorough passport checks will take place at Madrid international airport (ibid.).
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
