Although no specific information could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate on early October 1999 round-ups in Wolkite/Doba of people of Eritrean origin for deportation, the Ethiopian government did reportedly deport between 1,000 and 1,500 Eritreans between mid-October and mid-November 1999 (AFP 21 Oct. 1999; Voices of the Broad Masses of Eritrea 24 Oct. 1999; ERINA 25 Oct. 1999; AFP 28 Oct. 1999; ERINA 10 Nov. 1999).
The Office of the Government Spokesperson Website posted a 26 Oct. 1999 report that stated that the planned departure of Eritrean nationals was initially scheduled for 16 October 1999, but was suddenly stopped. The report also stated that when the Ethiopian government first announced plans to repatriate the Eritrean nationals, that the Eritrean government had agreed (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
