Jamaica: Information on whether the Domestic Violence Act has come into effect or been gazetted

During a 27 February 1996 telephone interview, the co-ordinator of the Association of Women's Organizations in Jamaica (AWOJA), an organization that has been involved in lobbying the government for domestic violence legislation, stated that the Domestic Violence Act has not been gazetted and that the legislation has not come into effect.

In a 26 February 1996 telephone interview, the first secretary of the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa stated that the Domestic Violence Act has not been gazetted in official government sources. He further stated that he could not confirm whether the legislation has come into effect or not.

Please see attached media reports for further information on the passage of this bill through parliament.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
