On 14 February 2001 an official at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa stated that a non-Jamaican citizen married to a Jamaican citizen has the right to permanent residence in Jamaica and Jamaican citizenship on the basis of his or her marriage. Citizenship on this basis is not accorded automatically, however. The person must submit an application. The official at the High Commission was not able to provide information on any discretion the relevant Jamaican authorities might have to reject an application for Jamaican citizenship on the basis of marriage.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
