According to the first page of the Reuters attachment of 7 March 1994, "several opposition groups, including the pro-Islamic nationalist Alash movement, have been denied the right to register as a political party."
According to page 861 of Country Reports 1995, which is available at Regional Documentation Centres,
unregistered opposition parties and movements include the Social Democrats, the Alash Party, and the conservative Kazakh nationalist Republican Party. The Government has refused to register any party of movement whose platforms it claims will foment ethnic tensions.
For information on the treatment of the Alash party, please consult page 17 of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) attachment of September 1994. For information on the political impact and objectives of Alash, please consult the second and third paragraphs of the third page of the Swiss Review of World Affairs attachment of 1 March 1994. For further information on the Alash, please consult the attachment sent to the DIRB from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies on 12 December 1995.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
