An Africa News report of 3 February 1999 states that a Democratic Party (DP) member of parliament, David Mwenje, together with two other members of parliament and an activist for the Green Belt Movement were arrested in Nairobi and charged with incitement to violence. The MPs were accused of inciting Nairobi University students to riot. The student riots concerned the allocation of forest land for housing and reportedly culminated in "the death of one person and injuries to several others, destruction of vehicles and loss of property" (ibid.). All four men denied the charges and have been reportedly released on personal bonds.
Additional information on the possible arbitrary arrests and detention of DP members and activists in Nairobi could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
