International: Information on what countries in West Africa the Ora language is spoken in, and whether Ora is spoken in Liberia

Information on a language called Ora could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. An official at the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Washington, DC, was not aware of the existence of a language of that name, and suggested that the name of the language may have been misspelled to mean Gola (7 Apr. 1995).

Gola is a language of the West Atlantic branch, Western Sudanic subgroup of the Niger-Congo linguistic family (Katzner 1986, 2). Gola is spoken in the north of Liberia, and in bordering areas of Sierra Leone and Guinea (ibid. 347, 353-54).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.

Note on oral sources:

Oral sources are usually contacted when documentary sources have been exhausted. However, oral sources must agree to be quoted in a publicly available Response to Information Request. If they refuse, the Response will read "no information currently available." Contacting oral sources is also subject to time constraints; for example, there are periods of the year when academics are unavailable.
