The Arabic name 'Lejanne Torria' (Lijan at-Thawria) is translated into English as 'Revolutionary Committee'.
One source mentions the Revolutionary Committees as forming part of the security apparatus which do "act independently from other authorities when encouraged by Qadhafi" (Encyclopedia of the Third World, p. 1209). Another source puts it more bluntly by saying that these committees "...have security functions, designed to protect as well as monitor the populace. The result is multilayered, pervasive surveillance and control of individual activities" (U.S. State Department, Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1988, Washington D.C.: GPO, 1989, p. 1479). Further on, the same source adds that "Revolutionary Committees maintain surveillance of some Libyans while abroad" (Ibid., p. 1483).
Military service ,which has been compulsory since 1975, lasts two years (Encyclopedia of the Third World, p. 1218).
