Eritrea: Information on procedures for obtaining Eritrean citizenship for persons born in Eritrea, including children of a mother of Eritrean descent born abroad and a father holding Sudanese citizenship

According to an official source at the Eritrean Embassy the procedures for obtaining citizenship require that individuals prove that they are «registered Eritreans».  (Apr. 12, 1996).   Such proof is obtained by producing a birth certificate which can help to identify that the region of the individual's birth is within Eritrean territory (Apr. 12 1996).

Children of a mother of Eritrean descent, born abroad, may obtain citizenship if the procedures outlined above are followed (Apr. 12 1996).  Children of either parent providing such proof are entitled to Eritrean citizenship (Apr. 12 1996).  The children of a woman who has obtained Eritrean citizenship and who is married to a Sudanese citizen are entitled to Eritrean citizenship (Apr. 12 1996).
