Somalia: Update to SOM27549 of 27 August 1997 on place of issue of Somali birth certificates; update to SOM12922.E of 27 January 1993 on the names of the mayors of Mogadishu in 1988 and 1990

No information additional to that found in SOM27549.E of 27 August 1997 on the place of issue of Somali birth certificates, and whether a person born outside Mogadishu would be issued a birth certificate from Mogadishu, could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

Information on the names of the mayors of Mogadishu in 1988 and 1990, additional to that found in SOM12922.E of 23 January 1993, is scarce among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. On 16 January 1990 Ali Ugas Abdulle (also Ali Ugas Abdullah) was replaced as mayor of Mogadishu by Sa'id Umar Afrah (Radio Mogadishu 16 Jan. 1990; Reuters 16 Jan. 1990). Sa'id Umar Afrah also appears as Sayyid Umar Haji Muhammed (Radio Mogadishu 4 June 1990). On 17 September 1990 President Siad Barre approved Ahmad Jilicow (also Ahmed Jilao) as the new mayor of Mogadishu (Radio Mogadishu 18 Sept. 1990; Defense & Foreign Affairs Strategic Policy November 1990, 39). Information confirming that Ali Ugas Abdulle had already been appointed to the office of mayor in 1988 or the names of any other person who held the office before him could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
