Tanzania: Information on whether exit controls are currently in place, and on whether failure to return on a specified date is a punishable offence

An official of the Tanzanian embassy in Washington, DC, stated that there are currently no exit controls in place in Tanzania, and as a result there is no requirement for departing Tanzanians to return within a specific timeframe (14 Feb. 1995). Furthermore, in the current situation the question of punishment for failure to return on a specific date does not arise in either Tanzanian law or practice (ibid.).

However, the embassy official explained that senior civil servants, by the nature of their official positions, are required to obtain permission from the president's office before leaving the country. Also, if senior civil servants require an extension of their foreign stay, they must ask their ministry for the necessary permission. The DIRB is unable to corroborate this information at the present time.
